Abbey and P&P off to Flyers!

By Joe Perkins

Abbey kick off with 6 point haul - but P&P top after two big wins. Tough debuts for Ward End and Gunter. Goals scarce at Waverley.

Reigning champions Abbey began the defence of their title in ominous fashion as they notched up two victories in Shard End. Abbey defeated home-side Timberley 2-0 and St Bernadette's, 3-1. Timbers and Bernies shared a 1-1 draw.
Last season's runners-up, SS Peter & Paul commenced away at newcomers, Maryvale, and left Kingstanding with 6-0 and 9-1 triumphs over Gunter and Maryvale, respectively. P&P sit atop the fledgling table. In the evening's other game at the Vale, the hosts nudged out Gunter by 2 goals to 1.
Another new side, Hillstone, began their ESPSFA league life with an 8-2 win over fellow debutantes, Ward End. The Stone were then held in a goal-less stalemate by Audley, who recorded a 6-0 win, also over Ward End.
Goals were much harder to come by over at Waverley, where the goalkeepers were on top. This was reflected as the hosts, and new boys, Nansen, failed to trouble the scoreboard, and twas a carbon copy when Nansen met Yardley. The Youths, however, did pick up 3 points as they netted twice without reply against The Wavers.
